Unconventional ‘anti-perfumes’ from a Tokyo fashion house, smelling of incense, ink, tar and woods; Incense Avignon (2002) is the one critics single out.

Rei Kawakubo started Comme des Garçons in Tokyo in 1969. Its perfume line began in 1993 with Christian Astuguevieille, and the first perfume came in 1994. The perfumes are run from Paris by Adrian Joffe, Kawakubo’s husband.

Comme des Garçons, the fashion company Rei Kawakubo founded; no page read names its shareholders. It makes its own perfumes; a part-licence to Puig, from 2002, has ended. Checked October 2026.
