Etat Libre d'Orange
FranceSay it ay-TAH LEE-bruh doh-RAHNZH · French for 'Orange Free State', the former Boer republic in what is now South Africa
Provocative Paris perfumes with ironic names, composed by outside perfumers given free rein; best known for Sécrétions Magnifiques, built on the smells of the body.
Etienne de Swardt, who had written perfume concepts at Givenchy, founded Etat Libre d'Orange in Paris in 2006 and gave perfumers free rein. He named it after the Orange Free State of his native South Africa, and still runs it from rue des Archives.
