African sandalwood oil

Thinner, drier sandalwood-like wood with a slightly smoky, resinous edge.

What it is: Natural oil from wood of Osyris lanceolata shrubs.
Where it comes from: East and Southern Africa
When you smell it: Dry-down: hours later.
What perfumers do with it: Cheap sandalwood stand-in and, historically, an adulterant of true sandalwood oil.
Worth knowing: Like true sandalwood it is a semi-parasite, and overharvesting for oil has made it scarce in East Africa.
Rules: Limited. East African populations listed in CITES Appendix II since 2013.
