What it is: A molecule made in a lab.
When you smell it: Top notes: the first minutes.
What perfumers do with it: One of the best-performing aldehydes; lifts colognes and gives aldehydic florals their cool, radiant sheen.
Worth knowing: Houbigant used it in Quelques Fleurs in 1912, nine years before Chanel No. 5 made aldehydes famous.
