Earthy, peppery-green, musky and herbaceous, with a celery-like depth.

What it is: Natural oil from steam-distilled dried roots.
Where it comes from: Belgium, France, Hungary
When you smell it: Dry-down: hours later.
What perfumers do with it: Adds natural musky, earthy-green lift to citrus, chypre and green accords in tiny doses.
Worth knowing: It contains natural musk lactones such as pentadecanolide, which is why the root smells faintly musky.
Rules: Limited. Phototoxic furocoumarins; capped in leave-on skin products
