Strong, lasting sandalwood, milky with a grapefruit-bright top facet.

What it is: A molecule made in a lab.
When you smell it: Dry-down: hours later.
What perfumers do with it: Workhorse sandalwood note for reconstitutions and rosy florals; stable and widely available.
Worth knowing: It is sold under more than a dozen trade names, a sign of how many fragrance houses rely on it.
Also called: Dartanol (Firmenich, laevo form); Sandranol; Levosandol; Bangalol; 2-ethyl-4-(2,2,3-trimethylcyclopent-3-enyl)but-2-en-1-ol
