Black spruce oil

Fresh, sweet balsamic conifer, slightly fruity and airy.

What it is: Natural oil from steam-distilled needles and twigs.
Where it comes from: Canada (Quebec)
When you smell it: Top notes: the first minutes.
What perfumers do with it: Clean, cool conifer freshness for aromatic, fougère and woody accords.
Worth knowing: Spruce beer, brewed from spruce tips, was drunk by 18th-century sailors to fend off scurvy.
Rules: Limited. Pine-family oil: must be kept unoxidized (peroxide specification)
Also called: Picea mariana needle oil
