Campfire smoke, charred wood and tar, with a dry phenolic, leathery edge.

What it is: Natural oil from destructively distilled Juniperus oxycedrus wood, then rectified.
Where it comes from: Spain, Mediterranean
When you smell it: Dry-down: hours later.
What perfumers do with it: Smoky-tarry note for leather, incense and fougère accords; adds realistic burnt-wood character.
Worth knowing: Dermatologists have long used cade oil in shampoos and ointments for dandruff and psoriasis.
Rules: Limited. IFRA bans crude cade; distillates must meet PAH limits.
