Cedarwood oil (Virginia)

Dry, clean pencil-shavings wood, lightly sweet, balsamic and faintly smoky.

What it is: Natural oil from wood and sawdust of Juniperus virginiana.
Where it comes from: eastern United States
When you smell it: Dry-down: hours later.
What perfumers do with it: Affordable dry-wood backbone for masculine, chypre and woody accords; source of natural cedrol and cedrene.
Worth knowing: Despite its name it is a juniper, and its wood long cased pencils—hence the familiar smell.
Rules: Limited. Its α-cedrene counts toward the IFRA 49th Amendment cedrene limit.
