Citronella oil

Sharp, grassy lemon-rose; fresh but blunt, like insect-repellent candles.

What it is: Natural oil from steam-distilled grass leaves.
Where it comes from: Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Sri Lanka (Ceylon type)
When you smell it: Top notes: the first minutes.
What perfumers do with it: Economical lemony-rosy freshness for soaps and household products; historic source of citronellal and geraniol.
Worth knowing: Java citronella was long a major industrial source of citronellal and geraniol, before petrochemical routes took over.
Rules: Limited. Rich in citronellal and geraniol, both IFRA-limited
Also called: Java citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus); Ceylon citronella (C. nardus)
