Cornmint oil

Harsh, cooling mint; bitter-herbal and less sweet than peppermint.

What it is: Natural oil from steam-distilled leaves.
Where it comes from: India (Uttar Pradesh), China
When you smell it: Top notes: the first minutes.
What perfumers do with it: Cheap mint note for functional products; above all, the raw material of natural menthol.
Worth knowing: India grows most of the world's cornmint; chilling the oil makes menthol crystals separate out.
Also called: Mentha arvensis; Japanese mint; dementholized mint oil
