What it is: Natural oil from steam-distilled flowering tops of the lavender hybrid.
Where it comes from: France (Provence), Spain
When you smell it: Top notes: the first minutes.
What perfumers do with it: Economical lavender body for fougères, soaps and detergents; the grosso variety is the workhorse.
Worth knowing: Most purple fields tourists photograph in Provence are lavandin, a sterile hybrid of true and spike lavender.
Also called: Lavandula × intermedia (grosso, abrial, super)
