What it is: Natural oil from steam-distilled leaves.
Where it comes from: historically Morocco and southern France
When you smell it: Top notes: the first minutes.
What perfumers do with it: Once prized for the finest natural lemon-herbal freshness in colognes; now recreated from citral and synthetics.
Worth knowing: The genus Aloysia honors Maria Luisa of Parma, queen of Spain; Spanish speakers still call it 'hierba luisa'.
Rules: Not allowed. IFRA-prohibited and EU-banned: skin sensitizer and phototoxic
