Lemongrass oil

Strong, grassy lemon; sweet citral over an earthy, hay-like green base.

What it is: Natural oil from steam-distilled grass leaves.
Where it comes from: India, Guatemala
When you smell it: Top notes: the first minutes.
What perfumers do with it: Powerful, inexpensive lemon-herbal freshness, mostly in soaps and functional products; sparingly in fine fragrance.
Worth knowing: The first commercial ionones, the molecules of violet scent, were made in the 1890s from citral out of lemongrass oil.
Rules: Limited. Mostly citral; IFRA citral limits cap its dose
Also called: Cymbopogon flexuosus (East Indian) / C. citratus (West Indian)
