Menthol

Clean, icy-cool mint; more a cooling sensation than a smell.

What it is: Natural material from crystallized from cornmint oil.
Where it comes from: also synthesized (Takasago, Symrise, BASF)
When you smell it: Top notes: the first minutes.
What perfumers do with it: Adds cooling freshness in traces; mostly for oral care, shaving and cooling cosmetics.
Worth knowing: Takasago began making pure l-menthol in 1983 with Ryoji Noyori's catalyst, work later honored by the 2001 Nobel Prize.
