Cleaner, lighter patchouli—woody, cocoa-dry and less musty or camphoraceous.

What it is: Natural oil from patchouli leaves distilled in stainless steel, or oil refined by fractionation.
Where it comes from: Indonesia
When you smell it: Dry-down: hours later.
What perfumers do with it: Modern patchouli for transparent chypres and woody florals where dark crude oil feels heavy.
Worth knowing: Aceh in Sumatra has been famed for patchouli since its sultanate days, when the English East India Company traded it.
