What it is: Natural oil from steam-distilled needles and twigs.
Where it comes from: Russia (Siberia)
When you smell it: Top notes: the first minutes.
What perfumers do with it: The go-to 'Christmas tree' note for fresh, green-balsamic effects in fougères and home fragrance.
Worth knowing: Its signature comes largely from bornyl acetate, often about a third of the oil.
Rules: Limited. Pine-family oil: must be kept unoxidized (peroxide specification)
