Intense sweet licorice with a warm, spicy, slightly woody depth.

What it is: Natural oil from star-shaped fruit of Illicium verum.
Where it comes from: southern China, Vietnam
When you smell it: Top notes: the first minutes.
What perfumers do with it: The main natural source of anethole; adds licorice warmth to fougère and gourmand accords.
Worth knowing: The same fruit supplied shikimic acid, the starting material for the flu drug Tamiflu.
Rules: Limited. Limited through estragole content (IFRA 51st Amendment).
